Empowered farms & Families
Livestock Exchange & Sustainable Agriculture
Breaking cycles of poverty through food security and economic empowerment.
why we do it
For families on the edge, reliable income and nutritious food are essential to keeping children safe, healthy, and at home. The lack of adequate income and nutrition are major predictors of child institutionalization, especially for single mothers.
Through our Empowered Farms & Families program, Amani sustains long term household-level change by providing the tools and training to build stable, sustainable livelihoods.
But the real transformation happens through knowledge. This is climate-smart, women-centered, scalable, economic empowerment that neighbors can replicate. It’s designed to ensure no family ever has to choose between poverty and keeping their children at home.
how we do it
1) Each household participates in training on animal husbandry, small business skills, and basic financial literacy.
2) Participants receive starter livestock kits, including healthy pregnant goats or egg-laying chickens, along with essential supplies and veterinary support. These animals are selected not only for their resilience to drought and smaller ecological footprint compared to larger livestock, but also for their ability to quickly generate food and income.
3) Over 12-18 months, we monitor whether families are able to maintain their flocks & herds, increase household income, and improve dietary diversity. 4) Participants also return offspring or eggs into a shared pool, allowing the program to grow year after year—expanding impact without increasing cost.
Aligned Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 1: No Poverty, through sustainable income generation.
SDG 2: Zero Hunger, by improving household food security and nutrition.
SDG 5: Gender Equality, by empowering female-headed households with tangible assets and knowledge.
SDG 13: Climate Action, through locally adapted, drought-resilient livestock models.
